A Pre-Operative “Shopping List” for Patients Undergoing Orthognathic Surgery

Items to purchase from the pharmacy:
1. Child size, soft tooth brush or adult brush, compact head with soft bristles. 2. Liquid Advil or Motrin. (children’s)
3. Liquid nasal decongestant i.e.; Dimetap or Sudafed. (children’s)
4. Afrin nasal spray. (to be used twice daily)
5. Saline nasal spray.(to be used any time)
6. Vaseline for your lips.
7. Infant spoon.

Foods and drinks that are appropriate during the first week post-op:
1. Cranberry juice, apple juice, grape juice, protein shakes, Carnation Instant Breakfast, Boost and Ensure. Avoid juices with pulp. You should drink approximately 2 liters of fluid daily.
2. Applesauce, puddings, Jell-O, ice cream and yogurts.
3. Clear Broth, chicken, beef or vegetable. Pureed soups.

Foods and drinks that are appropriate during the second week post-op:
1. Oatmeal and Cream of Wheat.
2. Small pasta shapes like pastina.
3. Pureed soups, both clear and creamed
4. Milk shakes, smoothies.
5. Mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs.
6. Egg Salad, Tuna Salad.
